Schools Near Fire Area Plan to Shut Down

Many schools will be closed Friday because of the Topanga fire, either because they are in the path of the blaze or because of smoke and ash.
Among the closures: all Las Virgenes Unified campuses; Katherine Elementary and Knolls Elementary in Simi Valley; three Los Angeles Unified School District elementary schools -- Chatsworth Park, Justice Street and Pomelo Drive-- as well as several private and charter schools.
Canoga Park High School, which is being used as a Red Cross shelter, will remain open for classes, L.A. Unified spokeswoman Hilda Ramirez said.
Cal State Northridge canceled classes Thursday night, and students are advised to check the college’s website to see if the campus will reopen today.
Families in the fire area should contact their schools directly to see if those campuses will be holding classes.
