An 18-month-old boy, whose abduction from a gas station in a carjacking prompted an Amber alert, was found safe and was returned to his family, police said Monday.
Fontana police said the boy, Noah Leano, was discovered unharmed and sleeping in his safety seat in the rear of an SUV stolen more than nine hours earlier.
The vehicle had been abandoned with the motor and air conditioning running.
The incident began when Noah’s mother stopped about 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Foothill Boulevard to put air in her SUV’s tires. The vehicle was running when a man jumped behind the wheel and drove off, police said.
The 30-year-old woman chased the vehicle, banging on the side and yelling that her child was inside, police said. After several hours, detectives received a tip from a Fontana resident and located the SUV about 11 p.m. Sunday, parked in the Tamarind section of the city, police said.
