8,400 Gallons of Liquid Asphalt Leak Into River

A barge filled with more than 1 million gallons of hot liquid asphalt ran aground about five miles south of Richmond, leaking 8,400 gallons into the James River, officials said.
Gerald Seeley Jr., a regional director of the state Department of Environmental Quality, said there was no evidence of any substantial damage to aquatic life.
The leak closed a milelong section of the river, and the Coast Guard said cleanup would take several days.
