Gunfire erupted Sunday night outside the entrance to a neighborhood carnival in Jefferson Park, wounding two 14-year-old boys, one of them fatally.
A gunman walked up to the boys before opening fire near the entrance to the fair in the 3800 block of 2nd Avenue near Exposition Boulevard, said Los Angeles Police Lt. John Pasquariello.
There were many people nearby, including families with young children, he said.
Carnivalgoers heard gunfire and yelling, but by late Sunday night no one had come forward as a witness to the shooting.
One boy was pronounced dead at the scene, Pasquariello said. The second boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound.
Police said they believe the victims were targeted and that the gunman, who fled on foot, may have gang ties.
