Oil company execs as scapegoats

Re “Senators Turn Up Heat on Oil
Executives,” Nov. 10
Oil companies are in the business of making money from oil. Assuming that the companies didn’t engage in any illegal activity, such as price collusion, the interrogation of oil execs by Congress appears to simply be an attempt by legislators to scapegoat big business for Congress’ own inability and/or refusal to draft forward looking, responsible energy-related policies that would have promoted the kind of innovation and development necessary to reduce our dependence on oil.

When the oil companies make large profits during a cyclical upturn, it’s an evil act because it hurts the poor. When an individual makes an outrageous profit off the sale of a home during a similar upturn (in an era when affordable housing is an oxymoron), it’s a smart investment. Go figure.
