Looking for Answers to the Deadly Conundrum of Iraq

Re “More Than 90 People Die in Iraq Assaults,” May 5: Does it seem that Iraqi insurgents respond with even more devastating, coordinated attacks on police and civilians just after our officials tout the progress being made in Iraq? Only in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of the Bush administration can the recent horrific attacks be characterized as the last gasp of a disorganized insurgency.

Why is there no common sense in the world? There are two overriding truths about Iraq.

1. It is an artificial country contrived by the British after World War I. Therefore, it should now be divided into three countries -- Kurdish, Sunni and Shiite -- thus ending the squabbling over governing.

2. The U.S. needs to get every American out of there now, as we are accomplishing absolutely nothing.

It certainly is telling that a runaway bride, a languishing mayoral race and more Michael Jackson stories were considered of a higher priority to the media than the British report that detailed that the U.S. and British governments met to discuss invading Iraq long before it was mentioned to the citizenry and with no weapons of mass destruction as an excuse, just a straightforward invasion (April 29).

When history looks back upon the confounding irresponsibility and immoral acts of the Bush administration, the media (including The Times) will bear a tremendous amount of culpability for avoiding its duty to the public. Perhaps journalism is simply a bygone profession.
