To those editors wondering where USC’s team name of “Trojans” comes from: You! Times sportswriter Owen Bird wrote of a 1912 game that the persevering spirit of USC’s then-Fighting Methodists resembled that of the ancient Trojans. The nickname stuck and soon was officially changed.
