A strong earthquake shook northern Morocco early today, killing at least 15 people around the Mediterranean port of Al Hoceima, the state news agency MAP reported.
A civil defense spokesman in Al Hoceima said the village of Ait Kamara, nine miles away, was “completely destroyed.”
“So far rescue workers have found 15 bodies in that village,” he said by phone. Most houses there were built of mud bricks.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a magnitude of 6.5 and was centered in the Strait of Gibraltar about 185 miles northeast of Rabat, Morocco’s capital.
