Red Cross to Visit Hussein

GENEVA — U.S. authorities have given the International Committee of the Red Cross permission to see Saddam Hussein, but no date has been set, the organization said Saturday.
The Red Cross requested permission to visit Hussein after he was captured Dec. 13 and the U.S. declared him a prisoner of war.
“We have had a green light for a visit,” Red Cross President Jakob Kellenberger said in an interview with the Tribune de Geneve newspaper. “However, we don’t yet know when it will take place.”
U.S. Central Command spokesman Dave Culler in Tampa, Fla., said the military had no comment.
The Red Cross, a neutral, Swiss-run organization, is entitled to see POWs under the Geneva Convention, although the pact does not set a timetable for visits.
