Taiwan’s Ex-President Begins Weeklong Visit

Former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui arrived in Japan for a weeklong visit to a hot springs resort and university town, despite warnings from China that the visit could damage relations between Tokyo and Beijing.
A Japanese Cabinet official said Lee was visiting the spa as a private citizen. Lee did not speak to reporters upon arrival at an airport in the city of Nagoya.
Lee riled Beijing during his 12 years in office, during which he sought to raise Taiwan’s profile.
