Playwright August Wilson will receive the $250,000 Heinz Award in the Arts and Humanities from the Pittsburgh-based Heinz Family Foundation. Most of Wilson’s plays are set in Pittsburgh, where he was born and raised, although he has not lived there since 1978.
“His eloquent body of work uniquely captures the evolving and complex dimensions of the African American experience,” said Teresa Heinz, the foundation’s chair.
Previous winners have included singer Beverly Sills and dancers Arthur Mitchell and Jacques d’Amboise.
