Los Angeles needs more help from the federal government in detecting and responding to bioterrorism and nuclear threats, City Councilman Jack Weiss told a congressional subcommittee Thursday.
Weiss, who founded the city’s Threat Preparedness Task Force after the Sept. 11 attacks, also said the federal government could help increase the Los Angeles Fire Department’s hazardous-materials response capabilities.
He and other local leaders, including county Sheriff Lee Baca, pressed their claims for assistance at a hearing on preparation for biological, chemical or nuclear attacks.
The meeting was held in City Hall by the Congressional Subcommittee on Government Efficiency, Financial Management and Intergovernmental Relations.
Said Rep. Diane Watson (D-Los Angeles), a member of the committee:
“Congress and the current administration must provide the necessary resources for those on the front lines to prepare for the unexpected.”
