Federal regulators might bring charges in an inquiry into Enron Corp.’s trading activity before the end of the probe, which may take longer than a year, if evidence of wrongdoing is found, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman James Newsome said.
CFTC enforcement officials are reviewing hundreds of thousands of documents, in conjunction with other U.S. agencies, to determine whether Enron manipulated energy markets or committed fraud, Newsome said. He declined to say whether evidence of unlawful activity has been found thus far.
“We’re cooperating fully with all investigations,” said Enron spokeswoman Karen Denne, declining to comment further.
