Afghan Opposition, Deposed King to Meet

Members of Afghanistan’s opposition alliance were traveling to Italy to meet with their deposed king, who has been mentioned as a possible successor if the Taliban government is ousted in the U.S. war on terrorism.
Former monarch Mohammed Zahir Shah was to meet today in Rome with Frances Vendrell, the U.N. secretary-general’s special envoy on Afghanistan, a royal aide said.
The prime suspect in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is Osama bin Laden, and Washington has warned the Taliban that it would be targeted if it doesn’t hand him over.
