Voters Whittle Down Candidates in Primaries

Massachusetts voters went to the polls to choose the top two candidates in the rough-and-tumble race to replace the late Rep. John Joseph Moakley.
Seven Democrats and two Republicans battled in separate primaries in the heavily Democratic 9th Congressional District. The winner of the Democratic primary is considered the favorite in the Oct. 16 special election to serve the remaining year of Moakley’s term.
Moakley, a Democrat who held the seat for three decades, died in May after a battle with leukemia.
According to polls, the front-runner among the Democrats was Stephen F. Lynch, a 46-year-old state senator.
On the Republican side, banker William McKinney, 32, faced veteran state Sen. Jo Ann Sprague, 69.
