Arthur H. Purcell’s article about Monaco (“One Day, One Nation--on Foot,” Aug. 19) brought back a fond memory of my visit there two months ago.
Having been warned of the strict dress code for visitors to the casino in Monte Carlo, I was wearing a form-fitting long dress before I started my one-day tour of the principality. So you can imagine the inconvenience and awkwardness when I took the 300 steps down the clammy grotto in the Exotic Garden (Jardin Exotique) mentioned in the article. Nevertheless, I felt vindicated when a doorman at the casino turned away a European man wearing a sleeveless, V-neck shirt.
