Goodyear to Lay Off 1,400 More Workers

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said it plans to lay off 1,400 employees, or 5% of its manufacturing work force, at five U.S. plants this month because of weak tire markets.
The layoffs are in addition to the 8,000 layoffs the Akron, Ohio-based company announced earlier this year. Most of those layoffs were in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The layoffs will affect hourly and salaried workers at plants in Danville, Va.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Tyler, Texas; and Huntsville and Gadsden, Ala.
The layoffs will not result in any additional charges to earnings or savings beyond what it had already planned, the spokesman said.
Goodyear is the world’s largest tire company and has about 100,000 employees worldwide.
The company’s shares rose 33 cents to close at $18.18 on the NYSE.
