Hollywood Lights

The controversy over whether to paint the Hollywood sign red, white and blue--or leave it white--does not consider the best alternative (Oct. 27). Hollywood is home to the most creative people in theatrical lighting and special effects; I propose that a powerful lighting system be designed that could “paint” the huge white letters with red and blue sweeps of light--or any other colors and patterns. The sign could be customized for holidays, seasons and special tributes, much as the Empire State Building in Manhattan takes on different color themes. I just moved here from New York, and my greatest disappointment is finding that the famous Hollywood sign vanishes after dark. My solution to the patriotic paint job proposal lets the sign remain the traditional white but shine with brilliance every night.
