4 Americans Among 10 Awarded Wolf Prizes

Four Americans were awarded Wolf Prizes, Israel’s top honors for scientific and artistic achievement.
Alexander Varshavsky of Caltech was honored for his work examining how cells destroy unwanted protein. James Womack from Texas A&M; University and Roger Beachy from the Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis split the agriculture prize for research involving genetic engineering. And K. Barry Sharpless from Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla shared the chemistry prize. Overall, there were 10 recipients of the prizes, which carry a $100,000 cash award per category.
