Melissa Astete
SCHOOL: Birmingham
YEAR: Senior
SPORT: Track and field
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Astete began the season as the No. 3 returning pole vaulter in the nation, but her improved speed on the runway led to some inconsistent performances because she struggled with her steps.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Astete cleared a region record of 12-9 1/2 in a dual meet against Chatsworth to move into a tie for eighth on the all-time national list and into third on the state list. The mark topped the previous region record of 12-5 1/2 set by Astete last year and was the second-best outdoor mark in the nation this year. “We knew she was ready for something like that,” Coach Scott King said.
