Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Illinois

MASCOUTAH, Ill. — A Pan American Airways jet made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff from a suburban St. Louis airport because a landing-gear door had fallen off.
None of the 20 passengers or crew members aboard was hurt in the landing Tuesday at MidAmerica Airport, about 25 miles east of St. Louis. The Boeing 727 was headed for Sanford, Fla.
The original Pan American airlines ceased operations in 1991. A new, smaller service with that name began operating in 1996. After it filed for bankruptcy in 1998, Maine-based Guilford Transportation Industries bought its assets and resumed the service.
