Background Checks

Editors note: Bobby Prince, who could not buy a gun because of his arrest record and mental illness, rented a shotgun at the Agoura Hills Target Range and killed himself. His parents are asking the Agoura Hills City Council to require background checks of first-time renters.
Responsibility for the tragic suicide of Bobby Prince lies not with the gun range but with Bobby Prince.
Rather than renting a shotgun, he could just as easily have rented an automobile and driven off a cliff. Do we expect automobile rental agencies to check backgrounds of their customers before renting them a car?
