Senate Doesn’t Consider Districts’ Bids at Base

The state Senate adjourned Thursday without considering a bill that would require Tustin to turn over 100 acres of land on the closed Tustin Marine base to Santa Ana schools.
The bill, by Assemblyman Lou Correa (D-Anaheim), passed in April in the Assembly. The Senate was expected to vote on the bill Thursday. Instead, legislators considered only Senate bills before leaving for the weekend, Correa’s chief of staff, Chris Leo, said.
Sen. Ross Johnson (R-Irvine) has said he will propose an amendment to the bill to require Santa Ana Unified and Rancho Santiago Community College districts to accept an alternate land-and-cash offer worth $78 million. The districts have balked at the offer because a portion of the property is contaminated with chemicals used by the military.
