Greco Carries UCLA to Upset in Overtime

Michelle Greco scored 29 points and UCLA never trailed in overtime as the Bruins upset No. 19-ranked Arizona, 59-56, Saturday in a Pacific 10 Conference women’s basketball game at Pauley Pavilion.
Greco scored the Bruins’ last four points of the game, giving UCLA, 3-13 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10, a 57-53 lead with 2:35 left in overtime and a 59-56 lead with five seconds remaining.
Arizona (14-4, 4-2) had cut it to 57-56 on a free throw by Tysell Bozeman and a jump shot by Krista Warren. Kristee Porter added 11 points and 16 rebounds for UCLA, which forced 23 turnovers and outrebounded Arizona, 55-45. Arizona was led by Bozeman’s 17 points.

Reserve Joanna Smith scored all nine of her points on three-point shots in the second half as Washington State (8-8, 3-3 in the Pac-10) upset No. 18 Oregon, 67-64, at Pullman, Wash. Kourtney Shreve’s jump shot with slightly more than a minute left gave Oregon (11-4, 4-1) a 64-62 lead. But Smith responded with her final three-point shot to put Washington State in front to stay with 17 seconds to go.

In other games involving Top 25 teams: No. 1 Connecticut (14-1, 5-1 Big East) quickly wore down host Pittsburgh (8-9, 2-4) with its size and 6-foot-5 Kelly Schumacher’s 20 points to prevail, 83-43. . . . Coco Miller scored 19 points, and No. 4 Georgia (16-3, 4-1) recovered from its only Southeastern Conference loss with a 77-60 victory over Auburn (16-3, 4-1) at Athens, Ga. . . . Brandi Barnes had 18 points for host Villanova (13-4, 4-2 in the Big East), which played without Coach Harry Perretta and defeated No. 11 Rutgers (11-5, 4-2), 78-65. Perretta was with his wife, who was expecting the couple’s second child. . . . Jackie Stiles scored 49 points, the most by a woman in Division I this season, to lead No. 14 Southwest Missouri State (13-7, 7-1 in the Missouri Valley) to a 90-81 victory over Northern Iowa (11-4, 6-1) at Springfield, Mo. Stiles made 17 for 23 shots. . . . Lauren Beckman had 19 points and nine rebounds as No. 24 Utah (16-2, 4-0 in the Mountain West) beat Wyoming (8-8, 0-3), 54-48, at Salt Lake City. . . . Jaynetta Saunders had 34 points and 11 rebounds as Texas A&M; (12-5, 2-4 in the Big 12) withstood 41 points and 22 rebounds by Danielle Crockrom of No. 25 Baylor (13-3, 2-3) to win, 87-81, at College Station, Texas.
