Officers Cleared in Beating Case

PHILADELPHIA — No charges will be filed against police officers in the videotaped beating of a carjacking suspect just before last summer’s Republican National Convention, the district attorney said Tuesday.
Dist. Atty. Lynne Abraham said a grand jury found that Thomas Jones, 31, resisted arrest and that officers acted appropriately in restraining him.
Abraham said a combination of Jones’ strength, the effects of his cocaine withdrawal and “his desperation not to be arrested enabled him to violently resist.”
