CSU Channel Islands Faculty Housing

In response to Charles I. Sweet’s comments from July 22 regarding faculty housing at CSU Channel Islands, the housing he refers to had been abandoned by the hospital as unsafe and unsanitary many years prior to the university entering the picture.
The campus considered using some of the housing but found that, with few exceptions, the units were in deplorable shape and inadequate both in size and amenities, such as cooking and bathroom facilities. The cost to renovate these facilities would have exceeded the cost of new housing.
The campus is sensitive to retaining the Spanish colonial architecture, but most of the old housing lacked architectural significance. Of the few structures that were, the largest and most significant facility is being preserved as part of the 900 residential units being developed to create a high-quality environment for our faculty and staff at affordable prices. This project is one of many new housing projects that CSU campuses are doing because of the high cost of housing in California.
