Attackers Kill U.N. Agency Official

A United Nations refugee agency official was killed and another abducted during an attack on the town of Macenta in the southern part of Guinea, local residents and the agency said. Residents who had fled to the town of Nzerekore, farther south, told a reporter by phone that the unidentified attackers had crossed the border from Liberia. The dead man was identified as Mensah Kpognon, a Togolese national who was head of the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Macenta. Another agency staff member was reported abducted.
