Secession and Disclosure

Re “Bill Signed on Secession Disclosures,” Sept. 28.
Partial quote from Richard Close on Valley secession [and] fear that contributors might face retaliation from City Hall opponents of secession: “We don’t want to have a chilling effect on people contributing.”
Support of a public measure should be public knowledge. Refusal to reveal one’s backing of a position for fear of political reprisal may be a valid excuse in a totalitarian state but not in a democracy. If some of the supporters of Valley VOTE are reluctant to reveal themselves, then maybe their reasons for support are purely self-interest. And yes, this would have a chilling effect on contributions.
