La Canada got just what it wanted last week--a balanced attack that led to a 36-27 victory over four-time defending Rio Hondo League champion Monrovia, its first league title since 1987 and the No. 3 seeding in the Southern Section Division X playoffs.
If the Spartans, who had a season-high 185 yards passing from Eric Young last week, can throw effectively against Workman in a first-round playoff game tonight and in the playoffs, they could be a title contender.
“That’s what we were looking for, a good combination,” Coach Rich Wheeler said. “We’re not overlooking Workman. The play in a competitive league.”
Workman (3-7), which finished fourth in the Montview League, gave up three touchdown passes in the first half last week in a 40-8 defeat to La Puente.
Young has completed 49 of 91 passes for 810 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games. He missed the first three games because of ta shoulder injury.
The Spartans have rushed the ball effectively this season, with Chase McKibben averaging 7.7 yards per carry with 1,143 yards and nine touchdowns.
