The City Council on Monday denied a permit application for a Fourth of July carnival at Laurel Park. The permit was sought by the Chamber of Commerce, which is attempting to organize the event. Council members did not disapprove of the carnival itself but objected to plans to have exclusive use of most of Laurel Park for seven days. Chamber officials said they had looked at using the Armed Forces Reserve Center and Los Alamitos Raceway for the event, but found they could use neither. The council directed city staff to meet with chamber officials to work out a compromise. It will reconsider the item at its next meeting.
