One possible alignment for a light-rail system was struck down in Irvine on Wednesday.
Irvine Transportation Authority board members at their meeting voted unanimously to drop a proposed route along the San Diego Freeway median.
The California Department of Transportation had determined the freeway would have to be changed to fit in the rails. The move to drop further analysis of the route will save Irvine as much as $50,000 in state funds, city officials said.
The authority is still studying two other options for the Irvine section of a proposed countywide transit system called CenterLine--a route along the freeway and a line along the San Diego Creek Channel through Woodbridge.
