* Sony Corp. named Chief Operating Officer Kunitake Ando, 58, as next president to maintain the firm’s strength in electronics as it takes on new Internet business. Ando will replace Nobuyuki Idei, 62, who will become chairman and retain his position as chief executive. Idei will oversee Sony’s expanding operations in the Internet arena.

* Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham won European Union approval for their $74-billion merger to form the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company after they offered to sell some overlapping drugs. Analysts said the British companies could make similar concessions to win approval from U.S. regulators.

* Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. of Pasadena agreed to buy Stone & Webster Inc. of Boston for $150 million in cash and stock, plus a $50 million loan and the assumption of debt, the companies said.
