Saying He Wants to Try Something Else, Cey Retires

Dan Cey, a former All-City infielder at El Camino Real High and All-Pacific-10 shortstop at California, has retired from professional baseball.
Cey, 24, a third-round draft choice of the Minnesota Twins in 1996, was playing for triple-A Salt Lake City. He had been on the disabled list and appeared in eight games this season.
“It came down to, ‘Is this making me happy?’ ” Cey said. “Honestly, I wanted to do something else.”
Cey is the latest member from the high school class of 1993 to leave pro ball this season. Stacy Kleiner, a former Taft catcher, and Ryan Stromsborg, former Notre Dame outfielder, received their releases during spring training from the St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays, respectively.
