Online bookseller Barnesandnoble.com Inc. said its first-quarter loss widened to $44.2 million on spending to promote its Web site, add services and speed up deliveries. The loss of 30 cents a share compares with the year-ago loss of $20.2 million, or 18 cents. Sales more than doubled to $78.2 million.

Expedia Inc., the online travel company controlled by Microsoft Corp., said losses in its fiscal third quarter grew less than expected as acquisitions helped the company sell more hotel rooms. Loss from operations was $17.3 million, or 40 cents a share, compared with $6.8 million a year earlier. That was a smaller loss than the 57-cents-a-share average estimate of analysts. Sales rose to $58.8 million.
