Tie-Breaker Rule for Title Game Faces Vote
- Share via
The Southern Section Council will vote today on a proposal to implement a tie-breaker system in the football championship games.
After Mater Dei tied Long Beach Poly, 21-21, in the Division I title game last season, coaches from both teams voiced displeasure over the section’s rule that calls for use of the “25-yard tie-breaker” in all playoff games except the championship.
St. John Bosco Principal Bill Goodman submitted the proposal but said the idea originated with Mater Dei Principal Pat Murphy.
The vote is expected to highlight the 9 a.m. council meeting at the Sequoia Athletic Club in Buena Park.
Other items on the agenda coming up for a vote include:
* Whether to allow 14-year-old students to compete in varsity football under certain conditions.
* Whether to expand the boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving playoffs from three to four divisions.
The council will also discuss the possibility of holding competitions or practices on Christmas and Sundays. The section currently bans all athletic activities on those days.
