Senior forward Maylana Martin had 24 points, 12 rebounds and six assists Saturday as UCLA defeated Washington, 85-66, at Seattle in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Bruins, 18-10 overall and 12-6 in the Pacific 10 Conference, are hoping to attract an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Washington (8-22, 4-14) led at halftime, 40-38, but UCLA dominated the second half, making 59.4% of its shots while the Huskies made only 18.2%.
Freshman guard Nicole Kaczmarski scored 17 points for the Bruins, making six of eight shots. Forward Marie Philman made four of five shots and scored 11 points, while center Janae Hubbard had 10 points and nine rebounds. Martin made 10 of 19 shots.
Forward Loree Payne led Washington with 23 points, but made only seven of 21 shots. Guard Megan Franza scored 17 points, but also made only seven of 21 shots, including one of eight from three-point range.
USC 62, Washington State 59--Tiffany Elmore scored 16 points as the Trojans (15-13, 10-8) ended the regular season with a comeback victory over the Cougars (4-24, 1-17) at Pullman, Wash.
USC, which also got 13 points from Tiffany Washington and 12 from Danielle Golay, overcame a seven-point halftime deficit as Washington State went cold after making a season-high 61.9% of its shots in the first half. The Cougars shot 23.1% in the second half.
“I don’t think USC adjusted defensively in the second half as much as we just missed layups,” Washington State Coach Jenny Przekwas said.
A layup by Elmore gave USC a 57-56 lead with 2:45 to play, and the Trojans never trailed again.
USC outrebounded the Cougars, 45-27, with Washington leading the Trojans with 12 rebounds and Golay pulling down eight. USC had 22 offensive rebounds.
Yvonne Volkman led Washington State with 12 points, while Alke Dietel scored 11.
USC, hoping for a bid to the National Invitation Tournament, won seven of its last nine games.
