I am a musician and a New Yorker who visits Los Angeles frequently. Unlike Michael Steinberg (Saturday Letters, March 4), each time I visit I find myself wondering how the music community has remained silent about the inept, inadequate, poorly written, musically questionable music criticism of Mark Swed.
I can’t speculate as to what prompted such a ringing endorsement from the esteemed Mr. Steinberg, but I do know that there’s a lot of buzz about it among local musicians, who are bothered and bewildered by such grossly misplaced praise.
