Chinese Leader Visits Bombed Embassy

A top Chinese leader visited the ruins of his country’s embassy in Belgrade, the Yugoslav capital. The facility was mistakenly bombed by U.S. jets last year. Li Peng, the No. 2 official in China’s Communist Party, laid a wreath inside the bombed-out building to commemorate the three Chinese citizens killed there in May 1999 during North Atlantic Treaty Organization airstrikes against Yugoslavia. Li’s visit to Yugoslavia is intended to show support for President Slobodan Milosevic. On Monday, Li received Yugoslavia’s highest honor, the Order of the Great Yugoslav Star, for his “great contribution to the development of ties” between China and Yugoslavia, state television in Belgrade reported.
