It’s About Time Tiger Had a Handicap

In order to level the playing field, it is rumored that the PGA touring pros are asking for a change in the 2001 “Rules of Golf.” The new rule “the Woods rule” would state that each time Tiger Woods wins a tournament, he must reduce his allowable club limit by one club. Thus along about, oh, let’s say July or August, when he’s down to a driver, seven-iron and putter, the field will be somewhat level.

Watching the British Open was the height of sports because it showed the talent of a great athlete at the height of his abilities. Unlike the visual, however, the announcing was just like attending a church service. The hushed and reverential tones took all the joy and celebration out of Woods’ achievement. Sports aren’t really important in the totality of the universe, but they are supposed to be fun. Too many announcers forget this.
