The Ritz-Carlton chain has opened its first hotel in Africa--a 307-room low-rise resort overlooking the Red Sea at Sharm al-Sheikh, Egypt, at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula (a five-hour drive from Cairo). A spokeswoman said that the hotel, which welcomed its first guests Dec. 13, hopes to attract scuba-diving enthusiasts and other vacationers seeking an exotic locale with the comforts of a resort. Rates range from $160 to $420 for a room, $600 to $2,400 for a suite. Tel. (800) 241-3333 or see the Internet site https://www.ritzcarlton.com.
