Re the Belmont Learning Complex site:
In the years of 1928 and 1929 I attended Union Avenue School located on Union near 1st Street. Right next to the school, almost in touching distance from the schoolyard, were oil wells pumping away, day and night, along with puddles of oil on the ground and oil smells in the air. I am now 83, in good health and have had a minimum amount of illnesses in all my years--nothing serious.
I don’t know how long the oil wells were there before I attended that school, but I do know they were there quite a few years after. The L.A. school board ought to reassess its decision and listen to people who know. Take it from one who does.
