L.A. Broadcast Fans Get Royal Treatment

J.A. Adande wrote a lovely piece on Vin Scully, Chick Hearn and Bob Miller [“Three Kings”, Dec. 5]. There’s a forgotten broadcaster in this town who’s also worthy of the Hall of Fame: Ralph Lawler, now in his 22nd year as the voice of the Clippers.
Nobody has suffered more heartbreaking losses, yet nobody calls a more exciting game. Lawler begins each game believing it will be “a dandy,” and when that do-or-die three-pointer goes in to the sound of Lawler’s “Bingooooo!” you hear the optimism that is the heart and soul of the franchise.

Surely I am not the only one dissatisfied with the Laker broadcasts. This isn’t basketball coverage, it’s a love-in. Any resemblance between the coverage of the game and the game of basketball is purely coincidental.
That refrigerator needs to be unplugged.

After all the hype over Fox’s interview with L.A.’s three Hall of Fame announcers, the show itself was a disappointment. Too much spaghetti, not enough meatballs. Was it just me, or did those guys act as if the last place they wanted to be was in that studio? Chick and Vin were as grim-faced as guys facing root canals! Also, too much talking by the host, too many cliches, too many commercials.
