Frequent Phone Fliers

Christopher Reynolds’ Insider column (“Redeeming Frequent-Flier Miles? Get Ready to Wait,” March 5) gave me a glimmer of hope that someone had researched and would give me the straight scoop as to which airlines’ frequent-flier programs actually make it possible to cash in one’s miles.
I’ve had no problem getting through by phone. The real issue is that after six years and tens of thousands of miles and dollars, I have finally earned some (theoretically) free tickets on my airline. The problem: No matter how many months ahead I call (I’ve tried up to eight months in advance), they never have any seats available. I’d really like to know if they have some kind of scam going here.

Thank you for your frequent-flier article. Most unfortunately, yours is not an isolated experience. I have e-mailed several airline departments recommending that they carefully consider your article. Maybe if more journalists reported on how the U.S.-based airlines treat their most valuable assets--their customers and potential customers--someday the travelers’ “Bill of Rights” will finally mean something.
