Steinberg Beaten in Mid-Amateur

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys won his quarterfinal match in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Wednesday morning but was eliminated in the afternoon semifinals at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis.
Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn., won the 11th and 18th holes to beat Steinberg, 2 up.
Steinberg won three of four holes in a back-nine surge to oust Ken Bakst of New York, 1 up, in the quarterfinals.
BASKETBALL
* Ron Quarterman, coach at Burbank High for the last four years, and Greg Gomez, junior varsity coach at Harvard-Westlake, have emerged as top candidates to replace Darryl McDonald as the boys varsity coach at Alemany.
Final interviews were conducted Tuesday.
TENNIS
* An men’s team from Braemar Country Club in Tarzana will play in the USA League Tennis 5.0 Adult National Championships today through Oct. 3 at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The Braemar squad includes Doug Kolker, Jaime Barajas, Brian Campbell and David Wright, all of Woodland Hills, Mark Bledstein of Northridge, Julian Levin of Tarzana, Jeff Richards of Thousand Oaks and Scott Witjas of Calabasas.
* Darren Potkey, from Ventura, was appointed assistant coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
