St. Bonaventure Has Another Big Outing

The anticipated showdown between St. Bonaventure High and Harvard-Westlake lost some luster last week, when the Wolverines were beaten by Nordhoff.

Whatever luster was left quickly disappeared Saturday.

Lorenzo Booker carried the ball on 23 of St. Bonaventure’s 28 running plays, gaining 165 yards and helping the Seraphs overpower host Harvard-Westlake, 33-0.

Michael Spargo completed 11 of 23 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, both to wide receiver Adam Gray-Haywood.

“A lot of their kids were playing both ways, so it was a matter of wearing them down,” said Coach Jon Mack, whose team avenged a 20-6 loss to Harvard-Westlake last year in Ventura.

“At the half, it was still a game. One score and they are right back in it. But our defense did a tremendous job.”

Harvard-Westlake (3-2) was limited to 115 total yards and managed only three first downs in the second half. Quarterback Bryan Carlson completed three of 18 passes for 18 yards before being relieved in the second half by Evan Glucoft, who was two of seven for 18 yards.

Leading 16-0, St. Bonaventure (5-0) put the game away on its first possession of the second half. The Seraphs drove 49 yards in five plays to score on a 17-yard pass from Spargo to Gray-Hayward.

Harvard-Westlake fumbled on its third play and Isaiah Bridges recovered for the Seraphs at the Wolverine 27-yard line. Four plays later, Spargo connected with Gray-Hayward on a 12-yard scoring pass to make the score 6-0.

Mike Barrow increased the lead to 9-0 with a 24-yard field goal early in the second quarter. He added a 32-yard field goal in the third quarter.

The teams traded turnovers in the second quarter. David Garza intercepted a pass by Carlson at the Wolverine 29, but on the next play Kelechi Ogbunamiri intercepted a pass by Spargo.

Two plays later, Matt White intercepted a pass by Carlson and ran 44 yards for a touchdown.
