AMD Takes Speedy Chip Lead

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. unveiled a new version of its Athlon microprocessor that is faster than Intel Corp.’s top Pentium III chip, edging past its archrival in the microprocessor speed race. AMD’s chip runs at 750 megahertz, making it slightly quicker than Intel’s new 733-MHz chip. Microprocessors perform complex calculations that enable computers to process data. Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD and Intel, the world’s No. 1 chip maker, “are in a war for bragging rights” as to who has the fastest chip, said one analyst. AMD is counting on Athlon to help it return to profitability after three years of losses. Compaq Computer Corp. and other PC makers are planning to offer machines based on the 750 Athlon chip, AMD said. AMD shares rose $2.81 to close at $30.50 on the New York Stock Exchange, and Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel fell $1.31 to close at $78.94 on Nasdaq.
