Golden West Women’s Volleyball Team Clinches Title

Golden West clinched the Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball title Wednesday night, defeating Cypress, 15-6, 15-8, 15-6, at Cypress.
Kinsey Ross had 16 kills for Golden West (20-0, 13-0), which won its 58th consecutive match. Marissa Cothran added 45 assists for the Rustlers, who have one match remaining, against Fullerton on Friday.
Cypress (13-5, 10-3) is tied with Irvine Valley (15-3, 10-3) for second place in the conference. The two schools will meet Friday in the season finale.
In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:
El Camino 92, Fullerton 88--Jason Gaines, who led all scorers with 27 points, made two free throws with 1:17 remaining to put El Camino (1-1) ahead for good, 88-86. B.J. Smith led Fullerton (2-2) with 19 points.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Golden West 80, Grossmont 72--The score was tied, 36-36, at the half. Cliff Aska scored 17 points, including two three-pointers for Golden West (2-2), and Andy Westlake added 15 points, hitting all five of his free throws. Grossmont (2-2) was led by Nate Sandeford with 13 points.
Orange Coast 66, San Diego Mesa 56--OCC (1-0) outscored San Diego Mesa, 33-9, in the last 15 minutes of the game. Duc Nguyen led the Pirates with 16 points, including three three-pointers, and Chad Hagedorn added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Santa Ana 90, Mira Costa 82--Santa Ana led throughout the game, extending a three-point halftime lead to 17 points in the final minutes. Brian Chambers led visiting Santa Ana (2-0), hitting six of six three-pointers and scoring 20 of this 30 points in the first half.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Irvine Valley 64, Victor Valley 43--Irvine Valley (2-1) led at the half, 31-20. Jennifer O’Keefe led the Lasers with 14 points. Teammate Lauren O’Hara had 11 rebounds and 11 points.
Orange Coast 73, Mt. San Antonio 50--Sarah Middlebrooke led host Orange Coast (3-1) with 16 points and Shauna Steward, Leah Wilde, and Kristen Urban each scored 11.
Santa Ana 90, Barstow 47--Atari Parker led host Santa Ana (2-0) with 28 points. Terrial Cole added 20 points, making 10 of 12 free throws, and had 10 assists for the Dons. Stephanie Patten added 24 points for Santa Ana.
