Allen Stevens, vice president of research and development for Seminis seed company in Saticoy, has retired.
During his 42-year research and management career, Stevens, a world-renowned tomato geneticist, pioneered the development of seeds on which many of today’s commercial hybrid tomatoes are based.
In addition to his position at Seminis, Stevens previously served as vice president of agricultural research at Campbell Soup Co. and professor and geneticist at UC Davis.
“His commitment to breeding and the development of new technologies has brought Seminis to the preeminent position in the vegetable seed industry,” said Alfonso Romo Garza, chairman and chief executive.
In honor of Stevens’ work, beginning next year, Seminis will bestow the Dr. Allen Stevens Breeding Excellence Award to a plant scientist for outstanding achievement in plant breeding or technology development applicable to plant breeding.
Stevens’ successor will be announced later, Seminis officials said.
Seminis is the largest developer, producer and marketer of vegetable seeds in the world.
