Gay Rights

Now that Gray Davis is governor, our representatives are moving forward with an agenda that includes gay-rights and “domestic partner” legislation (“Opponents of Gay Rights Measures Stage Rally,” May 25). Race, religion and national origin are bona fide civil rights. Sexual preference is a private matter that has nothing to do with civil rights.
The idea that we are somehow “discriminating” against unmarried couples, gay or straight, is absurd. Heterosexual marriage has always been a cornerstone of society and a social objective that confers certain benefits. There is a fine line between civil rights and granting special rights. The goal is tolerance, not an affront to our sensibilities.

With the proposed new laws concerning gay rights, it will be interesting to see how folks prove that they are “domestic partners” and not just a couple of friends sharing a residence.
