Gwynn Goes on Disabled List

Tony Gwynn’s countdown to 3,000 hits has pulled up lame at T-minus 25.
The San Diego Padre star, 39, went on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained left calf muscle in Friday night’s 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. He’s eligible to return on June 6, right around the time he originally was projected to become the 22nd member of the 3,000-hit club. He’s holding at 2,975.
Gwynn, Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken, who all began the season with a chance to reach 3,000, have all gone on the disabled list this year.
“It’s ironic,” said Gwynn, who left the stadium Friday on crutches, his lower leg in a walking boot. “Boggs gets hurt, Ripken gets hurt and now I get hurt.
“There’s nothing you can say, nothing you could have done to prevent it. It’s just one of those things.”

Closer Rod Beck of the Chicago Cubs underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and will be sidelined six to 12 weeks. Beck, placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, had two bone spurs and several chips removed during the operation by Dr. Warren King in San Francisco. . . . Third baseman Ken Caminiti of the Houston Astros was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right calf muscle. He hurt himself stealing a base in Friday night’s 4-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Astros recalled infielder Daryle Ward to fill Caminiti’s roster spot. . . . Outfielder Rickey Henderson of the New York Mets, sidelined since May 7 because of a sprained right knee, was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Saturday’s 9-3 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. He went 0 for 4 with a walk and is batting .243.
